Curiosity about Catajo
As you come in from the arch of triumph which leads to the courtyard , there is a curious baroque 17th century fountain “The elephant Fountain” of eastern taste. This is unique 16th century out of the trhee sculptural represantions of Elephant in Italy in that era.
Left to the fountain there is the Giants Court Yard
once frescoed, became famous for its use of entertainment, it was custom to fill it with water in order to stage battles, organized to entertain guests at the castle during the memorable celebrations held here.
Inside the frescoed apartment of Ferrara room, you can observe signs of names, and dates on the pillar next to the door that overlook s the terrace; those signs indicates the stature of her Highness Maria Beatrice of Asburgo as a child that during her vacations at the castle in summer time, she kept record of her increasing height.
Going down two flights of stairs, just before reaching the frescoed Lodge, on the left, there is a sculpture of woman figure hollowed out the rock; this is Gabrina , a servant that lived and worked all her life at the Catajo . Gabrina was beloved by all for her sense of humor and jokes, it was decided to perpetuate every thing after her death, as matter of fact, if you look below her breast, there are three small metal pipes coming out to sprinkle water who ever got near to it. This trick is still operative by starting it up manually.
Like all the castles, Catajo has its own ghost story that mingles with real events that took place and disguised as a legend. In one of the rooms of “The Beatrice House”, there is a stone stuck on the wall marked with blood( not visible to the naked eyes), is that of Lucretia Dondi dell’Orologio, wife of Pio Enea who was assassinated in 1654, under a plaque, the event. Today the ghost of the beautiful Lucretia vagues in many rooms of the castle and many people assure they saw a figure dressed in blue, leaning out of upper windows of the Catajo.
